This novel unfolds at breakneck speed as it bounds between multiple periods, with Max and the Chief generally being in the thick of the action.

As with the first novel, there is a lot of rye humour throughout the story, but if anything this is even darker in tone than the first book and contains some outright shocking scenes, all of which, on the whole, because of the humour is well balanced and keeps you engaged in the story.

Having said that, there was at least one scene that I was a little mystified by, which involved Max's reaction to a comment by the Chief, which seemed a bit excessive to me.

This book also introduces the concept of time paradoxes and trying to figure out how to solve the problem without affecting the timeline or giving yourself a migraine in the process, not an easy task and is dealt with in a very St. Mary's manner.
