Favorite book of 2023 hands down, I’m obsessed.
I haven’t read a fantasy book that I’ve been this invested in in awhile. Everything about it hooked me and when I wasn’t reading I was constantly thinking about this book (still am a month later). Anyways this is going to be a jumbled review.
First off they’re going to a war college. People die left and right in this book and like I’m glad the author isn’t afraid to kill people but at the same time I’m over here wrapped in a blanket like “stop being so mean to me 😭”, some of the deaths just ripped my heart out, stomped on it, put it through a paper shredder…I was an emotional mess. Stakes were high and I felt it.
The dragons. They were super cool and incredibly intimidating. I need like a compendium of these dragons, the different kinds, what they look like, size comparisons… The fact that if your dragon dies you die (😭😭😭 if you know you know). When you bond with a dragon you have the opportunity to tap into their magic and develop a signet…or else you combust and die. I really liked the idea of the magic through the dragons and how each power was unique between dragon and rider.
Our main character is Violet who’s the daughter of a war general. Her whole life she’s been training to be a scribe like her father but at the last second her mothers like nope you’re joining the riders like the rest of your family. Violet’s always been fragile, her bones can snap more easily, her muscles are prone to tearing…the life of a rider is very physical and brutal and just in general this doesn’t seem like a good path for Violet. But she goes into this thinking one step at a time, just looking to make it to the next goal. She’s very smart and determined and she eventually starts thinking to herself that she could actually do this despite her best friend Dain (incredibly annoying) constantly trying to get her placed back in the scribe quadrant. This man, I swear. He has absolutely no faith in her that she can do this. He never once looks at her accomplishments and thinks to himself that maybe she’s got a shot. He’s always trying to hold her back.
Let’s talk about a man I do love…Xaden 🥰 We love a good enemies to lovers arc. Every time Violet and him interacted was gold. Most of my notes just say *screaming*. He just has that level of confidence that is so attractive. When he would show up to protect her, or when they would fight 😏 This man skyrocketed into the top of my book boyfriends list. I mean the things he says…

“You never considered that it was you I couldn’t stay away from?”
“When did I ever give you the impression that I give a fuck what people think about me? I only care what they think about you.”
“I’m not sweet. Please don’t mistake any part of me for soft or kind. That will only get you hurt, and whatever you do…Don’t fall for me.”
Oh it was FAR, FAR too late for that warning. I was already head over heels for him.
I’m so beyond ready for book 2.
