A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
2.0
I am truly glad that I found this book as an audiobook (so I heard it while being busy and didn’t take time I dedicated to other written books I’m reading currently) for free (I didn’t spend any cents on purchasing it).
Having read many many comments saying “You either love or hate this novel. No in between.” I find myself out of this theory. To me, “A Little Life” is simply an extra overrated novel that was worthy during some chapters but then tired me and couldn’t wait to reach the end out of boredom.
Jude’s pain and story and insecurities and thoughts and everything became unbearable to keep going. And not because they were horrible and sad but because I found his character being victimized by the author (lost the count of “I’m sorry”). Instead of making him some sort of human that you could feel sorry about and being sympathetic towards, I pitied him. Couldn’t stand him. And I feel bad for him represented in such way. He had an excellent background to be an unforgettable character but remained a boring one.
Also I didn’t enjoy at all this obsession of including every single tragedy that could exist to fit into a novel so readers can cry their eyes out. It becomes ridiculous after some point. Abuse, drugs, self harm, racism, illness, oppression, death...and the list goes on.
However it had some nice descriptions and moments. But that was it. I’m sure I’ll forget everything until the end of the year. Either not my cup of tea (which I doubt) or far fetched, repetitive and badly written.
