The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente

5.0

I read this as an audiobook and really enjoyed it!

It’s like combining the acid trip story telling of Alice in Wonderland with the quick-fire wording of Gilmore Girls. Even so, it’s still much easier to follow than many (probably) drug-fuelled narratives I’ve read in the past which makes me think this is just created by someone with a naturally wild imagination.

There’s some wonderful world building and we meet a wide range of fantastical creatures as September, a 12-year old girl, travels to and through Fairyland.

It’s easy to read September as a young child but many word and phrase choices are definitely aimed more at YA. Even so, I’d say you could get away with a younger child reading, if they enjoy fantasy adventures like Narnia. There isn’t any near-adult themes/content, from what I can tell, but there is some high stakes and possibly scary situations, if a pre-teen does pick this up. Prob best as a buddy read with a guardian, if your kiddo is easily frightened or struggles with harder words.
