The Troop by Nick Cutter
4.0
This book was a damn wild, unsettling ride.. and I loved it!
I have to say though, I was expecting it to be much more gory than it actually was. It got really disturbing and disgusting at times, but for some reason I wasn't fazed at all. Except for the animal harm scenes.. those were pretty bad for me and I skipped almost all of them. Maybe I'm just immune to gore at this point lol.
At first I wasn't sure what to really expect from this story. It seemed pretty straight forward; people trapped on an island with an unknown sickness.. but the twists and turns it took were.. idk how to describe it, not exactly horrifying. Well, they were horrifying to be completely honest, but like not scary. I think what really was scary was the psychological side of everything.
People do bad, really bad, things when faced with true fear and desperation.
It took me a while to get used to the quick shifting perspectives, but once I did, I found that it was actually pretty interesting and kept me constantly on my toes.
I had trouble liking any of the characters at first, kept having to remind myself that they literally were 14 year old boys being absolute little shits.
Won't get too much into details, but one of them was seriously messed up. Like psychotic serial killer in the making, messed up, and he just drove me crazy.
One of my favourite things about this book was the mixed media sources in between every few chapters; magazine articles, recordings, court testimonies.. They added an even more interesting element, and made the story even more engaging.
Overall, I'd definitely love to read more of Nick Cutter's books in the future.
