The Bone Ships by RJ Barker
5.0
Might as well review the whole series here as none are standalones.
Five stars to the first two books and four and a half for the third. The world is refreshingly unlike our own, the characters develop plausibly and interestingly through the series, and my disbelief was nicely suspended for all but the final climax, which is not always easy.
My only complaints are that the series tended to stay close to real-world nautical situations, so that there wasn't as much elevation of stakes throughout as I'd have liked, and when the deep magic did start to hit it seemed a bit jarring; also, the author tends to write run-on sentences, using commas when periods or semicolons would do better. Otherwise, great work.
