Dread Nation by Justina Ireland
5.0
I was a little wary going into this book, because I typically don't vibe with historical fiction. But, having heard the premise of the book, I was intrigued, and I wasn't disappointed. I really loved the world that Ireland crafted, integrating history with the SF elements of the story. I can't wait to continue with this series and have already bought the next book.
I really liked Jane and Katherine. They both went through a lot of development, and most of it seemed to come through their developing friendship. Jane learns that Katherine's interest in more "feminine" things doesn't make her any less of a force. Meanwhile, Katherine learns that not everything has to be perfect and to open up to others. They become a team and watch each other's backs. I really appreciated that this friendship plays a more central role than any romance.
I'm looking forward to continuing with this series and seeing where it goes!
