Jana Goes Wild by Farah Heron

emotional funny lighthearted slow-paced

4.5

Jana Goes Wild is an excellent follow-up novel set five years after the events of Kamila Knows Best. Heron created a wonderful slow-burn story about Jana and Anil’s evolving relationship as they confront their present situation and remember the heartbreak of their past. Jana’s journey in this book is about stepping out of her comfort zone and getting over her ex (Anil), and her struggles are relatable. This was another honest story that explores the societal expectations placed on women, the effects of misogyny, and the ways women are treated when they experience difficult situations. Luckily, the same amazing friend group from KKB is back to support Jana. The friendships are the highlight of these books for me—I love that there is an equal importance placed on friendship and romance in these stories.

Most of JGW takes place at a destination wedding in Serengeti National Park, and the descriptions of Tanzania are transportive and beautiful. It was a fun setting for the book, and it was exciting to read about these characters again through the perspectives of Jana and Anil. I went into this book wary of Anil, but by the end I was rooting for him and Jana as they learned to trust each other again. Their chemistry was sweet and it was delightful to watch them find their way back to each other. Heron’s writing is full of humour and charm, and I can’t wait to read more of her work!
