Well, that was underwhelming. It started out with a lot of potential, and I was anxious from the beginning until nearly the end, but the ending was just not it. It's been weeks since I finished the book, and I've been putting off writing the review because I didn't want to accept the fact that my first Holly Jackson book was a miss.
Bel is insufferable and consistently snarky throughout the book. VERY unlikable. Her character development is minimal until the end, and she only focuses on matters that benefit her. Ash, although a minor character, essentially saves the book due to his precious and kind nature, despite his weird habits. Even Ramsey was entertaining whenever he came into the scene.
The information dump in the last few chapters didn’t live up to the build-up and I’ll try not to spoil anything, but I felt bad for some characters who got tangled up in the middle. I don't think they deserved the ending they got. If you’ve read the book, you may know what I’m talking about. Also, there was a moment at the end where I just went, 'Huh?' because of how unrealistic it was, and it all went downhill from there.
I want to rate it as a 3-star, but I have to give props to that build-up because it was pretty good. Honestly, I'm very happy that I read this before starting the AGGGTM series because man, this was such a bummer.
