The Double Clue & Other Hercule Poirot Stories by Agatha Christie

4.0

I have been meaning to read some Agatha Christie for such a long time and finally decided to pick up this little book of short stories from the library last week. I think it was the right way to be re introduced to her writing because I did actually start 'And Then There Were None' a few years ago but didn't get passed the midway point - I couldn't connect to any of the characters as I barely knew who anyone was! perhaps I wasn't in the mood or right mindset for it. I have however read a few modern books since with the same premise - 'Daisy Darker' by Alice Feeney and 'One by One' by Ruth Ware, to name a few - which I enjoyed.

I really quite liked these short stories, which include -

The Market Basing Mystery - 1974
The Disappearance of Mr Davenheim - 1924
The Double Clue - 1974
The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb - 1924

Its amazing how they still read so well after so long and feel relatively relevant! I particularly enjoyed the quick satisfaction of the short and sweet stories, as I don't often get the joy of a 'reveal' when reading your standard length mystery or thriller. I usually guess most or all of the twists and turns, but this way I basically don't have time to guess whodunnit! Also, being able to 'complete' something in a small block of time is extra satisfying when I have very limited time to read and my mental load is particularly full.

I remember watching Poirot with my mum when I was younger, and the likes of Columbo and Murder she Wrote - which sit nicely beside my more current guilty pleasures of Jonathan Creek and Death in Paradise - so I really wanted to enjoy Agatha Christie, and I am glad I did!
