Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

2.5

Third time reading:
I feel like it kinda speaks for itself that even though I've never rated this book more than 2,5 stars, I keep rereading the series. Doing a reread now so I can read the final novella that was published recently!

Second time reading:
I'll keep my rating at 2,5 stars. This book is entertaining in a way but it lacks so much for me to properly enjoy it. SpoilerI still rolled my eyes so hard at "you're a b-b-b-b- BOY" lmao. That's when I know this is not going to be my best reading experience. At least this time around I know that I have better times ahead. Also I appreciated Kenji a bit more the second time around, which is also fun!

First time reading:
2,5 stars. I didn't dislike, but I didn't love it either. Why didn't I love it? Well, for one there was way too little world-building going on for a 300+ page book, I feel like most of the world-building came in the last 5 chapters, which had it's intended meaning in making me excited for book 2, but also lowered the excitement for this book overall. I also think it's very ya, in that the characters are not very complex, the writing feels simple and messy at times, and the dialogue is a little cringe-y now and then. SpoilerAlso why was it never explained why it is such a big deal that a boy and a girl spend time together in the same room, or sleep in the same bed?? Like, is this a modern society where propriety is suddenly highly valued again?? Felt like it was a bit of an overreaction when Adam came into Juliette's cell, with all that "you're a b-b-b-b-" etc. Also, where are all the women?? Lol.

That being said, I honestly liked this book a lot more than I initially thought. I flew through it in basically 1 day, and I enjoyed myself whilst reading it (except for the occasional cringe)! I am a sucker for magical abilities and such, and I like the occasional dystopia story, so this was fun! Excited for book 2, hopefully we get a lot more world-building there. It would also be nice with some answers on what the heck is actually going on.
