A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow
5.0
I really, really loved this. There's so much here that I'm not sure where to start.
I really enjoyed the found family dynamics here and the sisterly dynamic between Tavia and Effie. Strong friendships and sibling relationships are some of my favorite things in books, especially when the characters are willing to do anything to protect each other.
The world-building was really interesting, though I was a little confused when mythos were introduced that hadn't been mentioned before. Even so, I thought it was really interesting, and would really enjoy reading more from this world.
I also really enjoyed the social justice issues addressed in this book. I can't say much about the representation, but I really loved seeing the characters finding their voices and the strength to stand up for themselves. Also, the incorporation of performative activism in the form of Tavia and Effie's friends who were only willing to put themselves out there for justice when they felt safe was incredibly powerful.
