Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf

5.0

A brief but poignantly mature love story of two people falling in love in their seventies, baring their souls at night to each other with utter and total devotion whilst grieving over the mutual loss of spouses, nursing old injuries in their troubled marriages and a society's disapproving glance at the nature of their relationship. Addie and Louis hold on to each other in the darkness to brave the desolation that has become their existence after the death of their spouses. In this journey, they wrestle steadily against the socially prescribed and age-appropriate normative behaviour forced upon old people who must "act according to their age." It's also about neglectful parenting and what it can do to a child, becoming like a cursed family heirloom handed from one generation to the next. The ending is heartbreaking and unjust leaving you to feel angry and speechless.
