People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry
3.25
Easily the weakest of Henry's adult romances. Very interested by the author's note at the beginning: "The last one was for me. This one's for you." It showed. Did not have a strong sense of character from Poppy. Alex kept calling her "tiny fighter" but she wasn't? She never fought for anything? This sort of superficiality pervades the cavalcade of tropes the reader is subjected to through a poorly paced exploration of their friendship over the years: only one bed, grand gesture, SICK FIC??? All unfortunately quite contrived in the service of a friends-to-lovers story that I don't think the author believed in and I certainly didn't. The idea of opposites attracting is interesting, but the thing is that you do need something to draw the pair of them together. I don't think environment is enough, so travel doesn't serve this purpose.
This said: despite feeling this way from the 10% mark, I still read the whole thing. Her narration is just so eminently readable, never incompetent. Now I have made my way through her adult oeuvre and I am free to read anything else, but she remains an autoread, and I'm glad to see I like her books more as her career progresses; bodes very well for my enjoyment of her next.
