We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
3.0
Did I enjoy this?
All I can think of right now as a review is this: huh.
I can’t tell if I actually enjoyed reading this book or if I just finished it for confirmation that my Chapter 1 prediction as to who the poisoner is was right.
A lot has been said regarding the main character/narrator's psychological state, and while many found it to be delightfully delirious and entrancingly eerie, I found it to just...be. Maybe my lack of love for Real Literature™ is showing through here, but I wanted so much more out of this story. Not necessarily answers or firm conclusions, but perhaps slightly more guide posts? Or maybe a wider display of the different characters' neuroses? I get that the book was meant to feel claustrophobic and repetitive--that's the art of it--but just because it's art doesn't necessarily mean it's good.
