Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined by Stephenie Meyer

funny medium-paced

3.0

Honestly surprised with this one. The entire book is copy paste the original except for the last 50 odd pages but those last 50 pages are exactly what I wanted in the original. (no spoilers tho)

Admittedly I think smeyer basically just alt command f the entire book and changed all shes to he’s and all Bella’s to Beau’s but that wasn’t the most ridiculous part. Not only did she gender bend Bella and Edward to Beau and Edythe she genderbent THE ENTIRE CAST. Every Single Character including randos like the school nurse (now a man cause men can be nurses too 🤪😤) The only exception to this was Beau/Bella’s parents, Charlie Swan and Renee. For some reason Smeyer cites the standards of 1980s custody laws for keeping Charlie Swan and Renee as their original genders. This does however allow for a great quote from charlie describing how hot Dr Cullen is 10/10 CharliexCarlisle is canon. Further ridiculousness ensues with smeyer a gender bends which now truly highlight the ridiculousness of gender roles and heterosexuality. We also get some truly great and bizarre names that don’t really fit for characters such as Beaufort=Isabella (Bella), Royal=male rosalie, Archie=male Alice, and Joss=female James.

Other interesting looks at gender in this book include how with Edwards character now being female, she’s suddenly so less menacing. Her protectiveness comes across as more kindness and attentiveness, her jokes about being strong and fast are true but are constantly downplayed by her ‘petite stature’, and her ability to control herself seems more natural and less intense. We also get great visual gags like her ‘tiny frame’ carrying 6ft Beau piggy back style while she runs. Bella’s female experiences such as being bombarded by flirtatious guys since she is new, dress shopping and dinner with friends, being surrounded and threatened by men in a dark alley, and attending ballet as a child are replicated but slightly changed in this version. Apparently smeyer doesn’t believe men can do ballet or have dinner with friends. There are a lot of male attributes that smeyer didn’t discuss which I thought would make it more relevant and authentic.

its iconic honestly a simple money grab probably took under an hour to make the document and send it off. I would read the rest of this genderswapped series and i’m genuinely curious what else would’ve slightly changed. my favorite part was getting to new genderswapped names it felt like a little present for reading through trash 💕
