I found this to be one of those books that has a fascinating plot and interesting characters, but which fails to fully capitalise on these elements.
I would classify the plot as slow-moving as it concentrates on world and character building, but this is at the expense of engagement or palatable tension, which at best is just bubbling below the surface.
In many ways I found this to be a frustrating book, it held such promise but just failed to deliver. Having said that, I am hooked enough that I will be continuing with the series, which I can only hope uses the solid base of this book to reach the heights promised.
