This is exactly what my millennial ass needed to get through the rest of the winter.

This is giving me Victorian Harry Potter but a grown up, darker, and less problematic version. It definitely took me a minute to get into, and the length is quite intimidating, but once I was able to really build a picture of this world and the characters I was hooked! The setting was phenomenal. The dirty streets of London with its violence and crime, the isolated estate in Edinburgh, I was as enthralled with the world as I was with the magic. And the magic and fantasy aspect were also done extremely well. We aren't bombarded with too much information but the way that it is slowly explained makes me hope there is a lot of history and lore we will learn about later.

It definitely has some of the same tropes you'd see in a Harry Potter type fantasy or some YA novels but the complexity and darkness of the characters really set it apart for me. It gave me that feeling of totally losing yourself in a fantasy world that I haven't had in such a long time and made me feel like a kid again. Unfortunately now I have to wait a year before I can read the second book in the trilogy, but bet your ass I will be there on release day ready to stay up all night reading the next book!
