The Butcher and the Wren by Alaina Urquhart
1.0
1/5 stars. Physical book. Just because you are the host of a successful podcast doesn't mean you should get a book deal. This book was monumentally bad. I preordered it because I really like the Morbid podcast. I waited months for this. I am disappointed, not only by the terrible writing, but the obvious lack of research.
It looked like Shift+F7 (thesaurus) was her best friend while writing this. The writing is so choppy and she distracts from the story by explaining things. Why are you explaining how Socrates died? Why are you explaining lividity? If readers cared they would look it up. You don't have to explain everything to us. The twist was mildly surprising about Wren, but that was it. There's no character development, the storyline is confusing, and the poor research and writing skills take this book to the 1 star level.
Alaina, if you are going to write about Louisiana, please come here. Your research was so lazy with her research. If they were second year students at Tulane Med School, they aren't going to live far from the med school. They wouldn't live in freaking Ponchatoula. They would want to be especially close to the med school and hospital for their clinical rotations in third and fourth year. You didn't capture the spirit of New Orleans. You captured a google search. What a terrible disservice to New Orleanians. You spent all that time explaining the tombs at the cemetery and how they can't bury bodies because New Orleans is below sea level, but Wren has a basement? Ma'am. That is just beyond reproach. Also, they couldn't really ever have a festival on Bourbon. It's not setup for that. Those are just a few of the examples of why this book was so hasty.
Stick to podcasts.
