Matheson has been hit or miss for me, but I count A Stir of Echoes as a success overall. It isn’t perfect. Matheson has a unique writing style and I’m not a fan of some of the choices he makes-he spends much more time explaining supernatural phenomena in a way that seldom hells the plot, while ignoring almost all character development. But he can still set a mood and there is a good ghost story here. I liked the first half of the book a great deal. The second half went off the rails a bit in terms of the plot, but still had a solid ending. It’s no I Am Legend, but I found this to be an easier read than his other works and it kept me wanting to turn the pages. There were several creepy moments and even though it didn’t meet its full potential, I’d still recommend it to horror fans.
