Sunny Song Will Never Be Famous written by Suzanne Park, narrated by Joy Osmanski

PUB DATE: June 1, 2021

This sweet & hilarious YA contemporary coming-of-age story is about 17-yo Sunny Song who has minimal real-life experience but is a social media influencer with 90K followers. She’s dropped every hobby & interest to spend hours working on her content. After her parents & sister Chloe walks in on her baking brownies livestream but accidently wearing just her tattered sports bra, her principal tells them to send her to digital detox camp on a farm in Iowa!

Social media can sometimes blur the lines between our real selves vs our online façade. During a small group meeting, their life coach asks the kids to make a “meme” of themselves on a poster board. Some kids consider their online life as always “on”, under demand, glitzy/glam or downright fake. While their real self is depressed, scared, & vulnerable. As Sunny starts to realize all the things she’s missing out, she is torn between the empire she’s trying to build that may hold her future vs the relationships & experiences she has in the real world. She makes a friends including Delina, a black mukbang youtuber & develops a sweet & lighthearted romance with Theo!

The underlying message that connecting online can be crucial and should be used deliberately and intentionally while maintaining interests and relationships in real life is equally as important.

It was clear to me why “Sidebraid” had it out for Sunny. She’s the pivotal “mean girl” and if this was a movie, not one person would question her intentions. I’m confused why other reviewers thought it was vague and not addressed.

This was such a funny & cute story! Suzanne Park is a truly talented author and kept me entertained from beginning to end.

“I didn’t realize you were the bow-and-arrow type.”
“You think I’m more the Smith and Wesson type?”

Thank you author Suzanne Park for sending me a finished copy & Netgalley & Dreamscape Media for the audiobook! I alternated between reading the book physically & listening to narrator Joy Osmanski bringing this hilarious novel to life.
