The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce
5.0
I have had a reader's block for a while but I wanted to read this some time ago so thought I'd try and see if I could get into it and it was the right one to pick up. A sad but sweet story. I like the way the secrets of the past are revealed as Harold walks and we switch back and forth between Harold on his journey and Maureen at home both finally facing the demons they have pushed aside for too long.
You start off resenting Maureen, at least I did, Harold's wife who seems an unsympathetic character but as the story progresses and you realise as in life there is more than one side to the story and you begin to empathise more and more. I feel that Harold is punishing himself at times for 'crimes and failures' he feels he has committed by the way in which he drives himself along with little regard for his own health and well being. The book also touches on the role that the media play in our distortion of reality and how many pander to it and manipulate it themselves. I'm sure I could probably have guessed some of the outcomes in the book but it was nice to just let the narrative wash over me. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and my time with Harold, Maureen and Queenie.
