The Character of Rain by Amélie Nothomb
4.0
This is a work of genuine genius. It bugs me for a reason I can’t pinpoint, but only when I look at it as something someone wrote if that makes sense, so 4 stars. What a genuinely interesting use of point of view. Incredible passages on the choice of first words, how people misunderstand children, connections to water throughout. Wonderful. The last chapter knocked my breath out of my body and the last paragraph made me literally drop my jaw in amazement. I’m fearful to reread it because I feel like it won’t be the same. Genuinely underrated and complexly beautiful writer.
