My Sister's Secret by Tracy Buchanan
5.0
What a great story, brilliantly told, with well-drawn characters and more twists and turns than the Isle of Man TT race circuit.
Faith, Hope and Charity (I know!) were sisters, teenagers in the 1970s, and the story focuses on the consequences of one fateful night when Faith is killed in a road accident. Those consequences are far reaching and don't find resolution until 30 years later.
Told in turns from the perspective of Charity and her daughter, Willow, I found myself sympathising with all the characters, even bonkers Lana and the person who turned out in the end to be quite different than we had been led to believe. The title of the book is a little misleading: there's not just one, but many secrets belonging to several characters which are revealed.
Faith had an interest in submerged forests, which Charity and Niall (Charity's boyfriend at the time of Faith's death), and later Willow, honour by visiting as many as they can around the world. As I knew nothing about submerged forests, this was an education for me. An added bonus.
A cracking story, with a highly satisfying ending. I loved it.
