I read this book while on a road trip and fell so completely under its spell that when I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it. This is an incredibly well-crafted story with all the tragic twists and turns of a Thomas Hardy novel while also managing to raise all kinds of big questions about racism, motherhood, and the complicated morality of good intentions.
