I couldn't resist jumping into the pages of The Blackened Blade as soon as my close friend recommended it to me. This fantasy novel intertwines light romance with a mysterious storyline. Micai, after enduring torture at the Facility, is unexpectedly transported back in time. Armed with newfound knowledge and a surge of confidence, she reshapes the future.
The concept of this story truly fascinated me. However, I couldn't help but wish for an editor or a beta team to assist with occasional grammatical errors and repetitive phrases. It would have been helpful if they could have simplified certain sections, as the core idea was often reiterated in different ways.
Set in a magical school filled with witches, warlocks, shifters, and elves, the book offers a glimpse into a complex magical system. Yet, I found myself wishing for more information about the mechanics behind certain abilities. Why can some individuals heal while others cannot? Additionally, the school's blatant disregard for student safety was disconcerting. Micai, the main character, endures relentless bullying, including having her room set on fire, facing unjust punishments from teachers, and even experiencing sexual assault (depicted on the page) multiple times.
However, the boys that Micai encounters in the story stole the show for me. With their intriguing blend of unpredictability, moral ambiguity, and straightforwardness, they prove to be the perfect companions for Micai as she rebuilds herself.
Content warnings:
Abuse, Sexual Assault - graphic & on page, past child abuse, bullying, torture
