The Mystery of Mrs. Christie by Marie Benedict
3.0
I swear 2021 is the year of 3-star reads.
This was an interesting take on a real life mystery. The author did a fantastic job at making me hate Archie and I commend her for that. It’s not often I have such a deep visceral hate of a main character.
However my hatred of him, made his chapters more of a slog to get through. I am not a fan of Present Tense narration so the two combined was a bit of a turn off.
Agathas chapters were fun to read and it was so interesting to watch her character progress throughout the story all the while knowing to some degree where it was going. I am incredibly curious how much was fabricated in her past but glimpsing the author notes it seems like she had a good basis for everything even if some of it is speculative.
I didn’t quite love part 2, only because there was a tone-shift in one of our narrators. Narratively the shift made sense, and I understood it. But I didn’t LIKE it. It altered my perception in a negative way even when I fully understood and honestly even empathized with the decisions they were making. I’m on my phone so marking out specific spoilers is too hard but perhaps when I’m at a computer I’ll elaborate more.
Overall if you’re a fan of Christie’s work and are curious about her life this will likely be an entertaining read. It’s both frustrating and kind of cool that we’ll never actually know what happened during those 11 days. Maybe it was killer wasps. Maybe it was this.
