Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon - Eternal Edition 01 by Naoko Takeuchi

5.0

Edit :March 13 2024 Decided to read again since I'm a in a reading slump lol Still Five Stars

Review : 5 Stars (Spoilers!) ( You can read it on my blog!!)

So a little backstory before I get into this.

So if you follow me on my personal Tumblr page( not my book one because I barely use it), you would know that I'm a HUGE Sailor Moon fan. Like I can rant about Sailor Moon topics until my mouth falls off.  I have been a fan of Sailor Moon since I was like 9 years old ,watching the DiC and Cloverway dubs on Toonami. It was really my induction to the world of Anime along with Dragon Ball Z and others. I used to come everyday after school at 3 pm to watch Serena and the other Sailor Scouts ( Sailor Mars/ Raye Hino/Rei Hino was and forever will be my fave) fight against evil. It was such an amazing show with friendships, fighting evil and of course romance. (FYI: Darien Shields  was my first anime crush when I was young and shipped Serena/ Darien before I know what shipping was lol.)  I had the Sailor Moon Doll and one of her rods ( the Cutie Moon Rod with is still my fave Rod/Staff of hers) and my brother couldn't stand it .lol I watched it until toonami stopped showing it cause they showed all the episodes ( which all of us thought.. (heh heh) and they started showing another shows in it's spot.  So I kind of forgot about Sailor Moon and moved into my Harry Potter phase at the age of 11. lol

So fast forward to 2008, where I was about to enter my first year of college and I found this fb group page dealing with Sailor Moon. That's where I rekindled my love for this series which have been going strong ever since then. So through my journey, I gained a lot knowledge about Sailor Moon . From learning their actual Japanese Names, to learning how much DiC/ Cloverway  dubbed censored,( Viz dub FTW) to learning there was another freaking season that didn't even aired in the US. ( Sailor Moon Stars part 2 Dvd /Blu-Ray Nov 12th bitches),to learning about the Manga and all the Sailor Moon Lore.  I found and read the Mixx translation where they Used Bunny instead of Usagi  which really made me see Sailor Moon in a total brand new light.

So what is Sailor Moon About?

So Sailor Moon is about a 14 year girl called Usagi Tuskino who find this cat name Luna on the street. This cat is a magical cat who gives Usagi a magical brooch so she can transform into Sailor Moon, the champion of Love and Justice. Her mission is to find the other Sailor Senshi aka Guardians so they can find an lost Princess of an ancient Kingdom which wield an magical artifact called the Legendary Sliver Crystal which have unlimited power. They have to find her and the crystal before both of them fall into the hands of evil.

So the first volume covers the first 7 acts of the Dark Kingdom arc which is 13 acts in total. It covers from when Usagi mets Luna and becomes Sailor Moon, to when she meets Ami, Rei, and Mako which they become Sailors Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter and join the team ,to when she founds out Tuxedo Mask real Identity and his backstory and everything else in between (  Dark Kingdom aka Beryl and the Shittenou ( Jedite, Zoisite, Nephrite and my boo Kunzite)( FYI Again : Mamoru Chiba is my number 1 book boyfriend until the end of time. No other guy can take his damn place.  Sorry Rhysand lol) One of the reasons I love the manga is the fact that it doesn't wait for no one at all. While I love the 90's anime, it sometimes dragged it's feet due to all the fillers . So by time the plot  picks up it's feel like it been an eternity. The manga on the other hand,is very fast paced which unfortunately was one of the complaints that Sailor Moon Crystal. ( Which is awesome sauce. Forget about the haters! It's the closest we ever going to get to the manga being animated.)

With Naoko's artwork and story, the manga transports you to a world that almost feels fairy tale like. Like it's own magical world as you see the transformation of this ordinary 14 year old girl. Who fave part of the day in school is lunch time, who would rather sleep or read manga instead of doing Math or English Homework, who dreams of becoming a princess and being in love to a Warrior of Love and Justice. Who have to balance between fighting the forces of evil, to becoming the leader of the team with 3 newly made friends, to mysterious dreams of a past life, to bumping into this gorgeous but mysterious high school student who makes her heart pounds every time who looks a lot like her new found crush/ally Tuxedo Mask....  Sailor Moon life lessons include: being brave to fight what you believe in, being true to oneself, the strength of friendship is magical and the powerful of love can make feel strong and powerful and everything else in between.

So the Eternal Editions are the Third US Translated Editions of the Sailor Moon Manga. The first one was Translated by Mixx while the second and Eternal Editions are translated by Kodansha. They are bigger versions of the Kanzenban or perfect editions they come out in Japan during the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon.  While they are so pretty to look at with color pages of Naoko's beautiful art, it's heavy as hell since the paper is on is like photo paper. With each volume being 300 pages, I'm glad that they also released the digital editions of them.

Sailor Moon and Naoko Takeuchi really paved the way for the modern Magical Girl genre since a lot things that Sailor Moon did has really become a staple for that genre and the other Magical Girl shows that come after it. From Petty Cure, Winx Club, W.I.T.C.H, and others.  Sailor Moon has also influenced a lot of people from the west as well.  From Rebecca Sugar ( Steven Universe), Thomas Astruc ( Miraculous Ladybug), Sarah Raughley ( The Effigies Series), Sarah J. Mass  ( ToG, ACOTAR)  and of course Marissa Meyer ( The Lunar Chronicles ) The funny thing about Marissa Meyer is  that she wrote a lot of Sailor Moon Fanfics under the name of Alica Blade. Which you can still find all her fanfics on FF. net. So it's suffice to say that Sailor Moon has made a powerful impact around the world.

The next review of Vol 2 is not going to be this long. lol
