The Sky on Fire by Jenn Lyons

4.75

Jenn Lyons is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. I loved her Chorus of Dragons series, and I had a really great time reading The Sky on Fire.

This is a dragon riding tale and the influence of Anne McCaffrey's Pern is clear (and acknowledged by the author) - but with a pretty big twist that I won't spoil as I personally feel this is a book best going into knowing as little as possible. It's a stand alone epic fantasy, though I would not be surprised at all to see more books appear set within this world.

If there's one reason why it didn't quite reach five stars for me, it's that while the characters and relationships were all interesting and enticing, they sometimes felt just a little bit underdeveloped.  I would have liked a bit more focus on emotions as well as on building connections between several of the characters (for example, between Ris and Sicaryon) This is however not a major criticism, just something that could have propelled the novel over the line into five star territory.

Overall I really liked this and I can't wait to read whatever Lyons writes next.
