A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
5.0
I love Victoria Schwab, I'd like to start with that. Ever since I read her Archived books, I've loved her writing. But, I was scared to read this book. I haven't had the best luck with adult fiction, particularly fantasy. But still, I read it.
And I absolutely LOVED it.
It did take me a little bit to get into, but once I did it was smooth sailing. The world (or rather, worlds) is so interesting and unique, and I totally love Lila to death.
Honestly, I think the only complaint I could have was that pretty much every single character introduced in the book dies. I can literally count on my hand the characters that don't die, and I'm not sure I like that all that much. Especially since none of the deaths affected me, as I didn't really care about those characters much.
But, it was fantastic. Victoria's writing is superb (she writes a lot of quotable lines!), her characters are interesting and flawed, and I can't wait for A Gathering of Shadows!
My favorite line in this book, I think, was "No one suffers as beautifully as you."
