I couldn't stop listening to this book! The Inadequate Heir is Danielle L. Jensen's third instalment set in the world of the Bridge Kingdom. The events in this book happen concurrently with the events of The Traitor Queen, which means we get to see certain scenes from another perspective.

I'd describe it as a political and romantic adult Romeo & Juliet story (without the unfortunate double suicide). The forbidden lovers are Keris Veliant (Lara's brother, and Silas' heir) and Zarrah Anaphora are the children of bitter enemies on opposing sides of the endless war between Valcotta & Maridrina. It's got lots of plotting, scheming, back stabbing, double talking, steamy romance and a plot that keeps you reading... or listening.

Here's why I think it's the best one yet:

Jensen's character work is brilliant. I liked Keris' character in The Traitor Queen because there is obviously more to him than meets the eye. In this book Keris is well developed, with interesting traits and flaws. Despite being known as a poor fighter and more of an academic, his loyalty and capacity for love gives 'I'd die to protect her' vibes.
Zarrah has a tragic backstory which perfectly explains her personal hatred for Keris's family and why she's only too happy to slaughter Maridrinians until the cows come home. She changes a lot throughout the book because, as usual in a political story, everything is not as it seems.
Silas is your typical two-dimensional villain but that's ok. He's so hateful and grotesque that I didn't feel the need for him to have layers. He's there to be hated, so I did.
I thought I'd miss Lara & Aren's perspective but I didn't at all!

I can't wait to see what happens next... when's the next book coming out?!
