In Five Years by Rebecca Serle
4.0
A solid 3.5 stars. The book really surprised me in the way it unfolded. I thought I knew what the storyline e would be but I really had no clue. The relationships in it were much more real than I expected, the story much less the fairy tale I assumed. I think that’s why I ended up enjoying it as much as I did. I don’t really care for basic romance and definitely not if that’s the entire point of the story, I hate love triangles, happily ever afters are nice sometimes but usually unsatisfying. This was none of those things even though you think it will be. It took a good portion of the book before I really started to care about the main characters though. For a while I though it would be a big disappointment, maybe 2.5 stars. The writing was straightforward with some really touching lines here and there but the characters felt distant somehow. Eventually it becomes clear that was intentional because it’s how the narrator lived, keeping emotions at a distance without really realizing it. The development of the story and the depth of emotion was well done and I’d recommend the book to anyone looking for a story to make you think about the relationships in your life and the time and energy you devote to them. Parents, friendships, lovers, workmates, even your relationship with your own dreams and ambitions. Nothing so deep that it fractures you but strong enough to leave its mark when you’re finished.
