Carry on by Rainbow Rowell
5.0
AMAZING.
Review on my blog.
I don’t even know how to start with Carry On. I loved it so much I can’t even!
I didn’t expect this book to become one of my favorites of all times. I’ve read every novel Rainbow Rowell has written, and I like them all a lot. They were 4 stars novels to me, because thought they’re really good, I always thought there was a little something missing from her novels. So I was kind of expecting that from Carry On, too.
Oh man, was I wrong.
I think everybody knows by now that Carry On comes from Fangirl. At first, when I knew Carry On was actually going to be a book on its own, I was a little hesitant. You see, even though I loved Fangirl… I hate the Simon Snow parts. They were incredibly boring and didn’t contribute anything to the story. In fact, I began to skip all those parts and I don’t think I read even a 5% of the Simon Snow section of Fangirl.
But then I realize Carry On was going to be a fantasy book with a gay main character, inspired by Draco and Harry fanfiction… and slowly but surely I began to get really excited. This was my most anticipated release of 2015.
And it did not disappoint.
The start, I must say, was a bit slow, but it was very interesting getting to know better the world Rainbow created. At first, I couldn’t stop comparing Carry On with Harry Potter, but I just forgot about that as the story was becoming its own, and we get to know the wonderful characters.
After the 150 pages mark, I couldn’t stop reading and I was fangirling so hard with every page. The romance is AMAZING, Simon and Baz are just perfect for each other. Rainbow managed to do a perfect balance between action and romance, and that’s very hard to find in young adult literature.
The characters are so… real. I loved almost all of them, but Baz have a special place in my heart. I LOVED reading from his point of view, I loved every scene he appears, I love his interactions with his family, with Penny, and obviously, with Simon.
And I have to talk about the importance of this book. A young adult fantasy book with a main gay character. As an avid reader of fanfics, I’m used to straight couples as canon, and gay couples just part of the imagination of the fans. And I am so grateful that an author like Rainbow Rowell, a well known romance author, wrote a book with LGTB themes… and not just the “side kick friend” but the actual protagonist of the book. This is not the first fantasy book with a LGBT character, and it will not be the last. But I think this is a huge step to the right direction. Carry On debut as number one in the NY Times best sellers Young Adult Hardcover, and have been there for three weeks and counting.
So… yeah, thank you, Rainbow Rowell, for writing such an amazing story.
