The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

4.0

I reaaaaaaallllyyyy loved it!
It's wholesome, innocent, funny, fast-paced. Everything you'd want from a middle grade!

Perceus Jackson is a 12 year old boy, struggling at school with his dyslexia and ADHD
Living with his mom and terrible step-dad
One day him and his mother go on a trip, when strange things start happening
an unusually volatile thunderstorm, monsters chasing them.. Percy is scared out of his mind but his mom, strangely, seems to know exactly what is going on.
She hits the pedals, until they reach a hill
a bolt destroys their car
they're running up the hill when they're met with a Minotaur, which Percy escapes but his mother is killed by.
Beyond the hill is a summer camp, Camp Half-Blood
with its 12 unique cabins
He's thrown in Hermes' cause he's still "undetermined"
Until his father, Poseidon, claims him. He sets off on a Quest with his two friends; Annabeth, daughter of Athena and Grover the Satyr
the quest is to retrieve Zeus' stolen thunderbolt, his symbol of power, or else a WW3 would erupt between the three brothers, namely Zeus, Poseidon and Hades.
The suspect is Hades of course, Lord of the Underworld. (I have to admit, I'm disappointed he doesn't look like the Disney version of himself. What do you mean he has long black hair!???? NEVER. He'll always be a blue flame-head in my heart.)
Hades weaves the soul of the tortured onto his cloaks, and Percy wonders whether it's the same for his underwear and "what horrible things would you have to do in your life to get woven into Hades's underwear?"

Moving on. Hades wasn't the thief, the poor thing. He starts complaining about how crowded the Underworld is. He's a hilarious guy. He also had his symbol of power stolen from him.

bla bla bla Percy retrieves both Thunderbolt and Helm of Darkness and returns them to their owners. Hades rewards him by bringing his mother back to life "sorta, she never died in the first place".
Percy is hurt that Poseidon thinks his existence was a mistake, but he's content enough for now.
Grover goes out on his Searcher dream, and Annabeth goes back to her family for the new school year, and Percy also goes back home.
