Masked Prey by John Sandford

5.0

Once again, Mr Sandford has picked an obscure fringe group to make the focus of his novel and - not unusually for the time it was written - he’s picked the alt-right and their hangers-on. As usual there are a few genuinely interesting insights into their behaviour and a few really cheap shots at their expense, which aren’t undeserved. I really only had an issue with one coincidence in this book and also with the ease that Davenport works out where the killer is going to be for the climax. Aside from that, the pacing was great: the routine police work which can kill a novel like this is made interesting and is really central to fleshing out the mechanics of the books. I also felt that the plot machinery was much less on display in this book than it has been in several previous novels. There’s also a terrible pun in here that I absolutely loved.
