Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman
5.0
I may not always love westerners but when I do love 'em, they are probably this exact book.
Finally, after two months of searching, I found myself an absolute winner, after many (not that many...) disappointments this year, the stabby-female-character-with-a-cause (except this one shoots things) trope does it again! + hard but crafty settings + non-preachy -kinda obvious- but still necessary message, made this book a delight to read.
Get ready to go on a ROAD TRIP! as fan favourite (more like my fav) Kate is looking to avenge her father, very Inigo Montoya-esque of her (consult your Brincess Bride). Accompanied by anger, stubbornness and unwillingness to listen to anyone - as any heroine would. She embarks into this quest, and will unintentionally destroy many places (she also shoots things) just to make sure she kills this man, and everyone who follows him.
And! no quest can ever be completed without a cool gang of strangers who somehow end-up following Kate for various non-greedy or opportunistic reasons, like:
The Colton brothers. Will & Jesse. They bicker, they sass, they have tragic backstories. They are delightful and infuriating specially for Kate who wants no contact with humans...ever!
Liluye (I'm not sure how to write her name I listen to this on Audiobook.) the perfect foil for Kate's murdery ways. She's kind and hard, but fair and she has beliefs she is not willing to just let go. #I'mproud
We also have the big evil bad guy, who is... you guess it: BAD & EVIL! He is looking for a certain treasure that cannot be linked to Kate's family in any way, ever.
Okay but seriously, this book was pure unadulterated entertainment gold! There was a lot of blood, grief, tension, intrigue and even romance. It's basically a treasure hunt but while the bad guys want the treasure, Kate wants murder. It's great. Although Vengeance Road is about the quest for revenge, it has heart, and it makes you love Kate so much that in the end you just want her to be happy.
It also has some pretty cool twists that I enjoyed.
If I had one nitpick: I would say that although I was mostly in-love with the audiobook. The voices for some of the characters (specially Jesse) were kind of off compared to the mental image I had for them. Also, I was kind of uncomfortable with the way some of the Apache were depicted...idk if it was just me...
Two things: 1) WHY DID THEY HAVE TO KILL WILL? NOT FAIR!! 2) They really scare me at the end...i thought maybe JessexKate would never reunite!
