Epitaph of a Small Winner by Machado de Assis
5.0
Prior (recommended) reading: Candide - Volatire
It's difficult to know where to start with Epitaph. Wildly creative, and waaaayyyyy ahead of it's time (from a literary standpoint), the book's premise and structure are a pleasure.
In death Braz Cubas has the liberty to be truly honest upon reflecting on his life, accomplishments, lack thereof, vanities, conceits, and philosophies. De Assis plays with the audience, and our perceptions of ourselves through his narrator, masterfully.
At times the book is hilarious, at times beastial, but mostly it's supremely homan in it's unassuming honesty about many things that trouble us or that we might try to get away with for our own pleasure.
