An Illustrated History of Thailand by John Hoskin
4.0
Hoskin's history of Thailand places a heavy emphasis on the architecture of Sukothai & Ayutthaya and can be a little dry in the beginning. Things begin to pick up about halfway through though. For example, the retelling of Constantine Phaulkon and the French Jesuits' attempts to convert King Narai is one of the most fascinating things I've read in a while. The later chapters on Bangkok's political development is also well-balanced; Hoskin carefully chronicles the struggles Thais face as they attempt to move from a country of absolute monarchy to a constitutional democracy. The pictures accompanying the texts are super helpful as well.
I really wouldn't recommend this to anyone unless they were interested in Thai history, but if that's your thing, go for it.
