How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff

5.0

I bought this book after watching the movie and really enjoying the unique perspective of a post-apocalyptic setting. Right as the Great War begins, seen from the eyes of a young girl who doesn't really understand what's going on. I enjoyed How I Live Now so much more than the film. The movie allows the romance between Daisy and Edmond (first cousins) without recognizing the absurdity of what it means, while the book shows that their relationship is part of the corruption that the war holds on their lives, whether the children realize this or not. Isolation from society and no accountability from adults breeds an extremely unhealthy and inappropriate lifestyle for a bunch of young children who may think they are able to care for themselves, but they really aren't at all. The brutality of war is so haunting when seen from the eyes of a girl whose innocence is slowly fading as she takes in the destruction of the world around her.
