The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow

5.0

this book was whimsical and magical and fun and definitely a little stressful and sad, but overall, was such a cool reading experience. i’ve never been one for portal magic so i haven’t read many books that deal with a concept like the doors in this book, but i should definitely start because WOW. it was so unique and at the introduction of each new door i was excited to learn what the world beyond it would contain.

i think the area where this book lost a little steam for me was the characters apart from january and her parents; i didn’t care much for samuel and while mr. locke was a great villain (loved the complexity there and how january had trouble seeing him as the bad guy considering everything he provided her), i had trouble telling all of his hunchmen apart.

this book was also a bit slow at times, and while i understand that certain concepts had to be introduced that way for the sake of the narrative, i think some scenes were a bit unnecessary! still though, i absolutely cannot believe this is harrow’s debut novel like i know she wrote other stories before this but wow. just, wow. i need to read more from her, asap!!
