On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

4.0

I wish this was less predictable. Everything else about it is so good! Angie Thomas is a phenomenal author, and she did not disappoint with this book. However, I saw almost all the twists coming from a mile away.

Good writing, good message, and a good cast of unique characters. I'm not the biggest rap fan in the world but this book uses music the way it should be used. To communicate across all boundaries! I love that the main character sees music that way and that important messages can be sent that way even without actual sound.

It's hard not to compare books when an author's debut is as incredible as The Hate U Give, but this one didn't quite live up to it for me. If you're going in looking for the exact same level I think it jsut barely misses the mark.
