Hopeless by Colleen Hoover

5.0

4.5 Stars
Holy freaking shit the last 200 pages of this book are insane. Colleen Hoover has done it AGAIN. This book was like a roller coaster for me to be honest and I wasn't completely sure how I wanted to rate this. The first 200 pages of this book were extremely slow and boring and I didn't like any of the characters to be honest. The first half of this book deserves a 2 or maybe a 2.5/5 in my opinion. But then, then the second half of this book is absolutely phenomenal. The second half of this book is easily a five stars and I was crying and freaking out and reading so quickly just to find out what happens next, it was amazing. That is everything I expect from a Colleen Hoover book and more. So as you can see it's a little bit difficult to determine the overall rating to what at times felt like two different books. I ended up giving this a 4.5 rating overall because in the end, I'm going to remember the amazing last 200 pages of this book over the first 200 pages anyway, and the last 200 pages were too amazing not to give this book a high rating. The beginning of this story is the typical cheesy high school love story, which I was annoyed by. Sky constantly talks about how she enjoys making out with tons of guys because it makes her feel numb and she feels absolutely "nothing" and all this shit that just really irritated me. Now only that but she is constantly throwing the word slut out there as if it's nothing and it was really immature and annoying. I didn't like her in the beginning of this book. And then we have Dean Holder, who is so stalker-like and creepy in the beginning. He also has the temper of a two-year old which also made it difficult to find him attractive in any way. I was just frustrated with the two main characters who I found to be completely unappealing and boring.

But then, we get to this lovely point in the story, about 200 pages in, when the truth is revealed, and from that point on, it just keeps getting better and better. I was crying my eyes out, my heart was racing, and I couldn't believe how many plot twists were crammed into only 200 pages. I am still blown away over how amazing the ending of this book was. Like damn. This book features a lot of dark subject matter that I wasn't really prepared for including: rape, incest, suicide, child molestation, I mean the list goes on... I think that it why this book took me completely off guard. I mean here I am thinking this will be a light, fluffy contemporary read, but no. I should have known as it is a Colleen Hoover book that there would be intense and emotional shit in this book, but I had no idea what was coming. Wow. I will never get over how crazy the ending of this book was. I can't really say more without spoiling it, so this concludes my non-spoilery part of the review. This book was a good one. Just pick it up and get through the beginning because the ending is worth it, trust me. As far as comparing this book to her other books go, I still think Ugly Love and Maybe Someday are my favorites. But this one is definitely up there.

I had no freaking idea the whole time. The title of this novel... EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE NOW. Damn, for the majority of this story I thought Holder was creepy and stalker-like and I had no idea why he is the way he is. He finally found the girl he'd been searching for for thirteen years! Of course he's going to be over the top when it comes to something like that. I can't believe Sky's freaking Dad oh my god. I will never understand how a Father could do things like that to his own daughter. It's sick. But then we come to find out that he also did this to Les, Dean's dead sister! I nearly died. No wonder she eventually committed suicide. And nobody knew why.. Ugh it's so sad. This whole time Sky has been kidnapped by Karen, who we eventually discover is actually her aunt. Sky's real name is Hope, and her and Les together are: Hopeless. Omg. I can't believe Karen is John's sister and she used to get raped by him everyday. It explains her need to kidnap Hope and make sure she is okay. I had a gut feeling that Karen kidnapped her to protect her simply because of how nice of a Mother she was to her. I knew there was no way she just randomly abducted a little girl. What I didn't expect though was that John was her brother, and he had done the same thing to her. That took me for a loop. And the fact that he did it to Lesslie too. It makes me so mad. All these women who dealt with this horrible, pervert of a man. That final scene between Sky and her Dad was so heartbreaking. Then he just kills himself right there in front of her.. It's so sad and crazy. I just can't believe the emotional roller coaster this book just sent me on. I wasn't expecting any of that. I guess I just wish that in the end Sky would be able to tell Six everything. Because Six was such a huge part of the beginning of the story and then at the end it was like she was completely forgotten. I feel bad for Six because she's left freaking out over Sky and wondering if she's okay and she gets replaced as her best friend so quickly with Breckin and Holder. I don't know, it just makes me sad for her. Overall, I liked this book so much more than I was expecting to. I can't wait to read Losing Hope and find out even more about Dean's life with Les and how hard it was for him to lose Hope. Colleen Hoover is such a phenomenal writer and she never fails to amaze me.
