The Rain God: A Desert Tale by Arturo Islas
5.0
I loved this book. It was funny, at times dry, emotional, reflective. I’m not Mexican American but it spoke so well to many of my Latina experiences with religion/colorism/family/purity. At first I thought the vibe was John Steinbeck-y and it later for me mixed with David Sedaris’s matter-of-fact/reflective/emotional humor and story telling. And it says a lot that I’m contextualizong this book in the literary style of “modern” white male authors haha. The story does such a great job of weaving present/past and explains enough of the meaning to the characters while letting you also make your own interpretation. A pained yet loving immigrant family story. I also was struck by the start of the Rain God story and its descriptions of a monster in a cave, paralleled with the recent Problemista movie set-up. Overall loved and recommend, especially to other Latine readers who are looking for classics from their own heritage.
