We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian

5.0

*SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD!*

Good lord, this book was good.  Like, how was this book so good?!?

The angst/pining for the first half of the book was a bit much, as those are not things I tend to enjoy.  I love that Nick and Andy’s relationship grew out of them being really good friends first, and that throughout, even if there was a problem or hiccup, they knew they still had that friendship.  I really liked how Sebastian switched POVs through the book, but that it changed in sections, rather than swapping chapters, I think that worked really well for the story.

Once the story got past the angst/pining, it was a deeply romantic book.  Like, I basically read it in one sitting because I just could not put it down.  While it was very romantic, it also had really funny parts.  And I love when a couple can laugh at themselves and laugh at sex and not take things too seriously.

Ack, there is just so much good stuff in this book, I feel like I was to just keep writing and writing to mention all of it.  But I won’t, because I don’t want to have too many spoilers.

At the end of the book there is a note from the author talking about how she wanted to write a book that explores how queer media at the time (late 1950s) would have influenced queer folk, especially those deeply in the closet (legitimately, because it wasn’t safe to be out).  I LOVE that The Charioteer is included and is woven throughout the book, because I LOVE The Charioteer.  I love how it’s something that the queer characters in the book can share and maybe see themselves in, and how it’s a really big deal because it’s not a tragic ‘bury your gays’ story.  I think it may be time for a Charioteer reread…

I honestly wasn’t sure if this book would live up to the hype (pretty much everyone I’ve seen who has read it has loved it), but it 100% did.  I can’t recommend this book enough.
