After reading the first book, I knew I had to immediately jump into this one and that it would be a wild ride. Those The Forest vibes proved to be true as well. Dun dun dun.
It's a super fast read, I breezed through it and was left wanting more yet again. Though this one does end on a better note, and the cliffhanger is easier to handle. But there's still so many things that could go wrong, I don't think it'll be that easy to get off the island.
Brooke managed to annoy me AGAIN, albeit for a different reason. She's so against God, it's almost comical. Like, let the people be comforted, why is that so hard??
And it's not that she doesn't believe in God, cool, whatever, but that she felt the need to comment either internally or externally every time someone mentioned him. It got tiring after the first few times.
Otherwise though she did develop and is overall less whiney, three cheers for Brooke!!! I like her as a character, but she definitely has some more growing to do.
It's interesting how Cory, in comparison, is open to praying, saying Amen etc, so I'm looking forward to them having that conversation when they're finally safe. Maybe he'll turn Brooke into a believer? We'll have to wait and see.
We got more romantic scenes and I do ship these two, but I think my favourite relationship in the book is actually the father-daughter like one between Tom and Brooke.
Would you believe me if I said Tom is actually my favourite character? Even though he probably has some secrets too...still though, I feel like out of everyone, he probably knows what he's doing. If I was stuck on an island, with no way of contacting the outside world, I'd want him on my team.
I gotta say, coming into this series after reading so many of Kara's paranormal books, I keep expecting a vampire to show up at any given time and I'm still surprised there aren't any! Hah. Don't worry though, there IS something interesting going on, and you should read it to find out what.
The storyline has been very engaging so far and I can't wait to see what lies ahead. I'm hoping that this series will continue even past the island (if they ever get off of it, that is).
As for the rating, it's definitely above a 4, but I can't say it hit a 5, so it's like a 4.25ish? Yeah.
