You Shouldn't Have Come Here by Jeneva Rose
Did not finish book. Stopped at 13%.
DNF @ 13%
I was really disappointed in this. This was one of my most anticipated reads, but it was definitely not as enjoyable as I expected it to be. What really threw me off was the writing. It’s very amateurish while at the same time trying to be literary; the overall effect is condescending pretentiousness.
I also don’t care for the characters. Grace is “not like other girls” because she works in banking and knows how to throw down without fists whereas Calvin is like a strange little golden retriever. He made franks and beans and she ate it while plugging her nose. He also describes her eyes, obsessively, as “blue, blue.”
Maybe there’s some potential here if you can manage to trudge through the beginning but nothing was gripping me to stay; I even flipped through to see if anything exciting happens and all I could come across were some people Calvin kept secret and that make Grace uncomfortable. I thought there’d be a body in the padlocked basement and Grace was Calvin’s next victim but alas. I don’t think that’s where this was going.
