Sugar Street by Jonathan Dee
4.0
I enjoyed reading this book and was a bit surprised to see the average rating lower than I believe it should be. I understand that the book is about white privilege and greed and taking things that in a criminal manner, etc. But the part I enjoyed most was how he lived his life day to day in a small town, with no idea, paying in cash and mostly staying out of sight. This is not a spoiler because this happens early in the book.
Because the unnamed lead character is on the run Dee shows us how difficult and paranoid you must be to attempt such a feat in today's day and age. His interactions with the community are minute, but to me a bit meaningful and show the bit of compassion he has left in helping others.
As for the ending, I did not see that coming, but it was a clever way to end the book, despite the fact there will be others who disagree.
