After Me Comes the Flood by Sarah Perry
Far better than the average rating on goodreads would have you believe.
Unsettling and eerie. I know Perry says she never really means to write gothic novels, but she's clearly got a natural talent for it. She captures isolation and confusion so well. Whilst it's not spectacular, it is a page turner and she has such evocative writing that it was always a pleasure to read.
I do wish it had leaned into the supernatural more and that it hadn't just been "normal". But clearly that's not the novel she wanted to write.
