Cult Classic by Sloane Crosley
3.0
*Thank you to the publisher for sending me an ARC of this book to review!*
From the get go I really loved the writing here. I immediately picked up on the fact that Crosley just has a way of writing things down like she stole the ideas directly from my brain. That probably sounds bizarre but so many parts of this book just made sense to me in a way I’ve never experienced before. She just gets it. And she’s really funny even when she’s being terribly sad, which helps. My favourite brand of book.
I was really enjoying the first forty or so percent of this, but then it felt like there was some sort of seismic shift in the plot that just threw me off balance. I knew that this was a romcom with a twist (I mostly went in blind to be honest, pretty pink cover had me sold already) but the twist just fried my brain. It went in a direction wholly unexpected which some will adore, but left me disorientated. I started getting really confused as to what was going on, it had some sci-fi elements thrown in that I couldn’t understand. The plot just ended up getting a bit jumbled in my mind and I spent the last portion of the book confused.
For a romcom it also didn’t really provide on the romance front for me. There were some really great moments depicting different relationships between characters but the romance aspect wasn’t really an integral factor in my eyes. I did think that the characters in here were great though and there were some really funny moments. The dialogue in here made me chuckle a couple of times and I liked how open and honest most of it was. The conversations felt like much needed sort of closure for the protagonist.
This book was okay, but I didn’t love how it turned out as much as I anticipated I would. I know this author definitely has a story out there that I’m going to absolutely adore, just a shame it wasn’t quite this one!
