The Good Soldier Švejk by Jaroslav Hašek

5.0

The Good Soldier Svejk is hilarious. It is one of the funniest books I've ever read. (Imagine an even funnier combination of Candide and Kafka's Trial.) Svejk is a biting satire of war and the Austro-Hungarian Empire; its peoples, military, and bureaucracy, and an entertaining illustration of the transformation of society for the every man with the Fin De Siècle.

My one objection, as always in these circumstances, was its incomplete ending. Although, with it's nature and stopping point it was not overly abrupt.

I only hope, like the author, that the adjective Svejkian catches on.
